Night of Murder Live Event is Baaaaad
Funny looking picture, check. Clever catch phase, check. Find a topic that combines the use of both the picture and catch phase, check. Good morning everyone! The Warhammer Online Night of Murder Live Event is upon us! If I remember correctly, this will be the fourth Live Event Mythic has thrown at us since the release of Warhammer Online. On a scale of one through ten I would gave this event a three at best. Personally I felt that all the fluff and hype leading up to the Night of Murder was more exciting then the event itself.
Out of all the past and current Live Events I would say the Witching Night Live Event was my favorite. The Heavy Metal Live Event would be my second and the Keg’s End Live Event my third favorite. You would imagine that the Live Events would get better over time but it looks like they are going in the completely opposite direction. The Night of Murder is currently the worst Live Event to date. It feels like Mythic decided that they would focus more time to promote it then work on the actual event. If you look around on the surface of things you will see a lot of players claiming how great this event is. This really shocks me. Are we all playing the same game or are players using another game as a point of comparison?
Maybe I am just taking crazy pills or something but I think Mythic pulled a “Blue Steel” with this current Live Event. This event consist of oRvR, public questing, killing Keep Lords, and farming influence. I don’t know about you but that list seem kind of fimilar to me. Oh that’s right, that’s exactly what I do every single time I log into Warhammer Online. The only real difference between everyday gameplay and this event is the jazzy graphic above players and npcs. Is it me or expecting something different for Live Events too much to ask?
This Event was such a disappointment that I decided to sit down and write up a whitty post about it. A post that would contain all the downfalls and my ideas on how to improve future lackluster events. I picked out the pictures, the catch phases and even had a nice conclusion with the word “Magnum” in it. I was even going to use these cool looking bullets below to list my points. I mean how can you go wrong with a bullet style list?

The problem is even writing about this event bores to me. I put out a basic walkthrough guide within the hour of the event going live. It didn’t take much time because there was really much to write about. I still haven’t updated it with the minor things that I missed. I just can’t seem to get back into it. So I’ll do the honorable thing and end this post here. I hope that the new live expansion will make up for this baaaaad event. See ya on the battlefield!

Random lamb pic ftw!
And Night of Murder is okay; I like the marked PvP players. Still not quite living up to the hype, though.
The one thing I have noticed about this event is that it has gotten more people into oRvR and scenario’s on my server (Darklands). Since this seems to be the overall focus of WAR, I think that it is a good thing. The only thing that I don’t care for much is is the prizes. I would personal like to see more dyes included. As I haven’t figured out how to view the trophies on my character, they don’t really interest me much.
Yeah, like Sumo says, it did bring out a lot more people to oRVR where they were hitting Keeps like nobody’s business.
Just last night, I was in a T3 Keep defending warband that lasted well over 2 hours. I was fun and the persistent Destruction folks were putting up quite a fight!
Sadly enough, after reading your post. I have toa gree with you, and you are right. To hell with those titles, to hell with those rewards, to hell with shiny stuff above players heads that if you have one yourself you can’t see it.
One thing I have to say which Sumo has stated aswell, More people join in ORvR. Sad thing is, for some it is their first time, and I consider my knownledge of the game ot be basic, those below that.. well.. Phail
The scenario’s seem to pop earlier and more often than usual aswell, which my Engineer likes a lot *coug* solo *cough*
Thanks for getting my mind straight once again.
Cheers

Some suggestions I would like to see on your blog (no bullets):
-Is it possible to implement a button which lets me know by email if theres a reply to a certain post?
-I thought of this while writing this comment: Would it fancy you to look at all the scenarios (or some, or one) and which is your fav and write a guide(line) ‘how-to-play’ thingamajig.
-Don’t you hate it when people blame healers for not healing, or a tank zerging in without a shield, losing LoS, then he complains… ARGH!
Cheesr again
I posted a response to you on my blog at: http://squin.wordpress.com/2009/02/11/how-does-night-of-murder-measure-up-as-live-event/
I must say that while I agree that “Night of Murder” involves doing very little that I wouldn’t have been doing otherwise, I am enjoying it (although I finished almost everything in two sessions). I’ve seen more people in oRvR which IMO is always a good thing no matter their level of expertise. Having particular assassination targets defined has made people less timid in general, and I’ve experience some good PvP over the past week as a result.
Farming ten keep lords is a little excessive. Finding a guild leader in T2 or T3 is just a little too “random chancy”.
If I were to rate my favorite live events:
#1 – Heavy Metal (the factory scenario was awesome)
#2 – Witching Hour (I just like Halloween)
#3 – Night of Murder (a little too easy)
#4 – Keg’s End (PvE farming required competing against players for limited mobs – not fun. At least NoM gives you credit to entire warband for keep lords, etc.)
Damn my connection is acting screwy this week. I can see why a lot of players enjoy this event. Maybe on servers where there is a lack of oRvR this encourages them to participate. I personally just expected more from it. With all the hype leading up to this event you would imagine a hell of a lot more from it. That wasn’t the case in my situation. Maybe I was setting the bar too high and fell victim to the Mythic hype machine.
The thing is for me this holiday encourages good habits in people (that is assuming killing people can be considered a good habit).
The big difference i noticed wasn’t in open RvR but in scenarios where the marked for death mechanic made for some fun experiences as people started focus firing allot more than usual.
The problem WaR faces is unlike (to use the obvious example) WoW the main draw is player versus player, if in WoW all the npc’s diapered from instances leaving behind a sign saying ‘off doing holiday quests back in 10 days’ it would be problematic.
Witching night was a HUGE failure at this, people actively avoided the influence lakes after they realized they would just get farmed for kills by whoever was the larger force(&the keg end holiday, it was grindy as hell). Add to that the cauldron hag farming (which makes the marked for death NPCs kill quest REAAAAAAAALY short in comparison) which took people away from the RvR lakes and you had a holiday which discouraged the bread and butter of WaR.
Continuing the sandwich analogy all i want live events like this to add to the game is flavor, they should detract from what we like about the game in the 1st place but make it just a little different.
